How To Use A Carpet Cleaning Machine

Posted on December 5, 2017 in Uncategorized

If you’re considering renting or buying a professional carpet cleaning machine so that you can give your carpets the just-bought look they deserve then there are a few important steps that you need to be aware of before you actually go out and spend your hard-earned cash.

Empty The Room Of Furniture

Today’s carpet cleaning machines are so effective that it is important to clean the whole carpet rather than just spot-clean small areas as these are likely to stand out like a sore thumb – especially if it is some time since you last had your carpets cleaned.

So for ease – and to get the best finish you possibly can – remove all the furniture from the room you would like to work on. Remember that it may take your carpet some time to dry after the cleaning process so place your furniture somewhere where it won’t be in your way all day long.

Test On A Hidden Area

Testing your carpet cleaner is essential. You want to be certain that both the machine itself, and the chemicals you will be using, won’t cause any damage to your carpet so once your room is clear, and you have vacuumed it completely, select a hidden area (such as the area which is normally hidden by the couch or a book case) and try to clean this area. Ensure your carpet looks good afterwards and no color leaches from it.

Assuming your test goes well you are now ready to clean your carpet.

Clean Your Carpet

The next step is to actually use the carpet cleaner properly. Aim to work yourself around the room in long strips, ensuring you don’t miss any areas. Also appreciate that even the best carpet cleaners may leave your carpet a little damp after cleaning so aim to end up your cleaning by the door where you can easily exit rather than finding yourself stuck in a corner surrounded by wet carpet you will have to walk on.

Dry The Carpet

Next let your carpet dry. Consider opening windows or turning on the heating to gently help the drying process along and try to avoid the temptation to place your furniture back in the room too soon.

Replace Your Furniture

Finally replace your furniture. A useful tip is to place your furniture on small circles of kitchen foil so that if there is any last residue in the carpet from your cleaning then your furniture won’t cause staining, or become damaged by the chemicals. After 24-48 hours it should be safe to remove the foil altogether and dispose of it.

How To Clean Your Carpet With A Portable Carpet Cleaning Machine

Posted on December 2, 2017 in Uncategorized

Many people will attempt to clean their own carpet with a small portable carpet cleaning machine, that they either own, or rent from a department store or janitorial supply shop.

The results achieved vary widely. Some people will be happy with the results, while others will be extremely disappointed and frustrated. Here are a few tips to assist you to achieve success with your carpet cleaning whenever you choose to do it yourself.

The key elements that must be followed in order to have a successful cleaning experience are:

  • Follow the equipment manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Remove furniture or other objects from off the carpet.
  • Vacuum Thoroughly.
  • Pre-treat.
  • Agitate repeatedly.
  • Heat the chemical cleaning solution.
  • Extract slowly.

Follow the equipment manufacturer’s recommendations.

It is always vitally important to follow the equipment manufacturer’s recommendations about use and safety procedures. Read the manual supplied, or ask the supplier for specific instructions about operation and care of the equipment.

Remove furniture or other objects from off the carpet.

Cleaning will be more easily accomplished and more thorough if all furniture and other objects do not obstruct the equipment being used.

Vacuum Thoroughly.

This is probably the most important step in the process of cleaning with a small portable machine. Large truck mounted equipment usually have powerful vacuum generating capabilities, and can remove most debris, that would normally be left in the carpet by inefficient vacuuming. With small portables, the suction is not as great, and any soil in the carpet may be transformed into mud which will just be pushed around by the machine and cause the carpet to look even dirtier than before.

Pre-treating is another critically important step. Many spots and stains will not be soluble in the typical cleaning solution provided with rented machines, or bought at the store by non- professionals. The facilitate removal, these will need to be treated with specialty chemicals, that have been formulated for use on specific stains. Consult with a professional if you have any special problems on your carpet, as use of the wrong chemical could cause more serious problems or lead to unintended consequences.

Agitate repeatedly.

Agitation helps to speed up the chemical reaction of the cleaning agent. Some agitation is provided by most small portables, but to improve the efficiency of agitation, use a carpet rake and scrape or brush the carpet surface repeatedly, to work the chemical unto the carpet fibers.

Heat the chemical cleaning solution.

This is the biggest problem with portables. The cleaning solution cools rather rapidly, and therefore the cleaning efficiency degenerates with time. The solution is to start with really hot (boiling) water, and to replenish the solution with hot water, often. This is usually a “pain in the neck”, but is just one of the tolerable inconveniences of doing it yourself with a portable.

Extract slowly.

A slower pass over the carpet, with the machine, will always result in cleaner carpet, because this allows the relatively weaker vacuum to suck up more residue.

Follow these instructions to get really decent carpet cleaning results with your portable, but if your results are not as gratifying as you would like, just call in a professional carpet cleaning company.

Choosing a Carpet Cleaning Machine That’s Right For You

Posted on November 29, 2017 in Uncategorized

It used to be cost-prohibitive to own your own carpet steam-cleaner, but these days you can have your pick of models. Before you choose a carpet cleaner, take a look at the different options out there and decide what’s best for you. For instance, are you a neat-nick who wants to shampoo all of your carpet on a regular basis? Do you have pets or kids who are prone to spilling? Do you have mostly carpet, or would you like a machine that can clean your tile, laminate, and hardwood, too? Will you mostly be cleaning high traffic areas like halls and stairs, and sticking to a vacuum for the rest? How much storage space to do you have available? You have so many choices available, so to avoid becoming overwhelmed, assess your needs before you begin shopping.

How Much Horsepower Do I Need?

The most important decision when buying a carpet cleaning machine is to decide how much power you need. First, decide if you want an upright, canister model or a spot-treater. An upright machine is operated similar to your regular vacuum. These machines are best if you plan to clean an entire room of carpet four or more times a year. If you know you’ll use it at least that often, an upright machine is probably best for you. Keep in mind, though, that they are usually comparable or larger in size to your upright vacuum, so plan ahead where you want to store it.

Canister models are often able to hold more liquid, so if you have a lot of carpet and you’d like to be able to clean it all in one day, a canister model might be right for you. They can be slightly harder to manage, though, because unlike upright models, they have a separate hose, which will need to be drained and cleaned. However, because of the flexibility, they are great for cleaning stairs and behind furniture. But do your homework! Some upright models have separate cleaning arms with attachments.

Compare, Compare, Compare!

When you start your quest for an upright or canister steamer, you may be surprised at the variety of features available. For example, the Hoover SteamVac Plus is an upright model that features a hose for more versatility, and comes equipped with car cleaning tools and a bare floor attachment. The Bissell ProHeat 7950 Steam Cleaner appears to feature the same types of attachments, but is priced at about $100 more? Is it a rip-off?

This is where comparing features comes in handy – the Bissell has an onboard heater that keeps the cleaning water warm throughout use, which according to experts, gives better cleaning power. But, is it always necessary? If you only plan to do one room on a given day, you might not be using the steamer long enough to need the heater, so the Hoover would be perfect for you.

Would a Spot-Cleaner Be Sufficient?

When you have kids, pets, or both, spills and accidents can be a part of your everyday life. If you mostly want a steam cleaner to catch those spills before they turn into stains, or for small jobs such as high-traffic areas only, a spot-cleaner would probably be more than enough machine for you. The biggest benefits with the small machines are that they’re easy to store, easy to use, and best of all, they’re quite inexpensive. You can get powerful name-brand machines by Bissell and other companies for $30-$70, depending on features. They are great for busy families since they can be pulled out, used, and put away in a matter of minutes.

Don’t be fooled by the designation of spot-cleaner. These powerful little machines can also be used to clean stairs, high-traffic areas like halls and entries, and small rooms like carpeted bathrooms, even in the largest homes. They’re ideal for apartments or small homes where a larger machine would be overkill. In a small room, you can clean the entire area with your “spot” cleaner.

Just asking yourself a few simple questions about your needs before you head to the store will save you a lot of hassle. Be realistic about how often you’ll really use your new carpet cleaner, where you plan to use it, and how you’ll store it when it’s not being used. There are so many choices that you’ll be able to find one that meets your specifications exactly.
